In 1912, producer Henry Miller became smitten with his young discovery Ruth Chatterton. They teamed on stage in The Rainbow and for a time, off stage as well. In 1928 Hollywood beckoned. ‘Talkies’ needed ‘voices’ and Chatterton’s faultless English was her ticket to film stardom.

Nominated for Best Actress in popular tearjerkers like Madame X and Sarah and Son, Chatterton proved equally adept in feminist turn, Female. In 1936, she offered her cinematic piece de resistance as the superficial, selfish wife of Walter Huston in the Academy Award nominated Dodsworth.

A friend of Amelia Earhart, Ruth also earmarked her career as an aviator and sponsor of successful air derbies. By 1950, the actress/aviator became recognized as a novelist whose courageous, controversial work made The New York Times best-seller list. She tackled Anti-Semitism, McCarthyism, racism, and proved adept in making a positive ripple amid society’s prejudices.

RUTH CHATTERTON ACTRESS AVIATOR AUTHOR eBook Scott O'Brien

I couldn't put the book down. O’Brien has, figuratively speaking, brought actress Ruth Chatterton back to life. Using a plethora of quotes, facts and infinite detail which the author has unearthed about the woman—the book is impeccably researched—the reader is allowed to observe Chatterton much like they would if they were a film camera. Then as the many sides and aspects of this woman's life accumulate in front of the reader it finally reaches a point where, like a sudden euphony this reader felt that he knew the woman. In fact, I felt that I knew her so well that what she did or, more importantly said, no longer surprised me as I simply said to myself "Well, that's just Ruth being Ruth."

In short, Scott O’Brien has done a masterful job of biographical writing that anyone interested in film should not pass up. If truth be told, anyone interested in reading about a woman who almost from the day that she could take charge of her life until the day she died, lived life completely on her terms, should get a hold of this biography. In doing so, they will allow themselves to be a part of this remarkable woman’s head-long dash through life. For the most forgotten today, Chatterton was an important figure in the years following the introduction of sound and a star of the first rank. But the book is much more than that, it is a look at a woman who did not let social convention or the mores’ of her day limit her. Ruth Chatterton did not need a mass movement such as woman’s lib to prove that she was the equal of any man. Ruth Chatterton did it every day of her life by simply being Ruth Chatterton. It was a life-long accomplishment that I am so very appreciative that Scott O’Brien has pulled out of the shadow of obscurity and made available for all of us to learn and, in some cases, be inspired by.

RUTH CHATTERTON ACTRESS AVIATOR AUTHOR eBook Scott O'Brien Reviews

It is rather startling to think that a glamorous actress of Ruth Chatterton's ability and erstwhile fame has never had a full biographical treatment until now. We have Scott O'Brien to thank for this eloquent, well-researched, and knowledgeable new biography.

Chatterton hails from that difficult period following the demise of the glorious Silent Era, when beautiful voices and pellucid diction were desperately needed, and this actress certainly fit the bill. "Dodsworth" (1936), directed by William Wyler, is regarded as her most famous and successful film, and she gives a striking, even disturbing portrayal of a vain, selfish woman. Her great sophistication was perhaps given full vent in "The Crash" (this reviewer's favorite, 1932), however, opposite the young George Brent, one of her husbands. The pair was certainly one of cinematic history's most handsome couples. In "Madame X" (1929), Chatterton's performance is redolent of the great Sarah Bernhardt, no less.

It is to be hoped that this wonderful book will lead many to examine Ruth Chatterton's oeuvre, for she was certainly one of the greatest actresses of the twentieth century.
Scott O'Brien's biographies are always very well researched and he respects the subjects whom he is writing about. He is a biographer who does his homework and he has done so with his biography on Ruth Chatterton. This is a fascinating read on a marvelous actress. Highly recommended.
I’ve been waiting for a book to finally surface about this interesting and famous actress of the 1920′s/1930′s. It’s about time she got her due (but then, I’m partial-I'm a Chatterton). She was bold, blunt and daring in her thoughts, actions, opinion and words…which she voiced often. Not only was she a fantastic actress, but a writer and aviatrix (she was good friends with Amelia Earhart). She did what she wanted to do without apology and lived her life fully. Reading this book will certainly inspire you; it certainly inspired me.
Huge thanks to Scott O'Brien for another winner. Ruth Chatterton was and still is an icon and she had a well rounded life. Broadway, Film, Author, Aviator! Some accomplishment especially for the time. Learning about her family, husbands, and home life gives us an inside peak into a great star. Scott's research makes this a page turner. Thank you again Scott.
Very interesting book. It covers a lot of early Hollywood, the studio system and the stage work that actors had to do before film was the norm. Contains a lot of information on Ruth Chatterton and other actors (the famous and not so famous), directors, producers, celebrities and politicians of that time not previously known. Ruth Chatterton lead a very interesting life that did not end when she left Hollywood. She was definitely a feminist.
I liked Ruth Chatterton after watching her movies on TCM. Not only was she a terrific actress, an intellectual but was also one of the first pioneers for women pilots along with Amelia Earhart. This lady had everything and more and made no excuses on how she lived her life.
Chatterton left exactly one movie that has stood the test of time, Dodsworth, so is luckier than many of her contemporaries. She was so great in it, you used to look in vein to see any of her other work. Thanks to TCM, you can now catch some of her other work, such as in Female. She turns out to be a really interesting person, with a notable theatrical career and writing career and aviation career. This book brings her life story together, and she comes off as a renaissance woman, ahead of her time. Much of the book is by necessity second hand information as so many contemporaries were gone, but author does what he can do, and does a good job.
