In the late 1870s, Elijah Everitt and his son Charles leave Ohio for a harrowing adventure. Abandoning their Lake Erie fishing fleet and part of their family, they head west to start a new life. From Erie to the Mississippi River, Elijah and Charles join the endless stream of wagons and travel along the roads, but once they cross the Mississippi they are alone for the remainder of theirtrip to Colorado. Battling illness, injury, snow, and wind storms, they persist in their quest to build a new life.

I love stories of settling the west. The story itself appeared historically accurate for the most part. The characters were based on real people but the reader had little or no background about them. Their fishing boat fleet had been burned three times but no explanation as to why they thought it might be suspicious or why they were the only ones who had been burned out. I had a difficult time believing Charlie would be able to write so eloquently based on his education. The actual story of them traveling west dragged on and on. It had good parts to it, but overall, the story was average. Of course, if you want to see how they fared in their new homestead, you can get the next book.Product details
